Brachycefalie – platte snuit
De showkatten van dit ras hebben vaak een extreem korte snuit, maar ook de snuit van een ‘gewone’ pers is veel te kort. De korte schedel biedt onvoldoende ruimte voor de luchtwegen, oogkassen en tanden. Het brede hoofd met de te korte snuit veroorzaakt oogzweren, ademnood, waterhoofd, kiespijn en problemen bij de bevalling (dystocia).
Waterhoofd – hydrocefalus
Dieren met een korte snuit hebben door hun verkorte schedel minder ruimte voor hun hersenen. Uit onderzoek blijkt dat het fokken op een extreem korte snuit een waterhoofd (hydrocefalus) kan veroorzaken. Zo’n waterhoofd komt vooral veel voor onder peke-face perzen, zij hebben de kortste snuiten. Kittens met een ernstige vorm van waterhoofd, sterven meestal binnen twee jaar. Dieren met een minder ernstige vorm kunnen ermee leven, maar vertonen wel afwijkend gedrag: ze zijn slomer, spelen minder en slapen meer. Soms hebben ze last van afwijkend lopen en springen (dronkenmansgang, misspringen). Ook komt er doofheid voor.
Nierfalen door PKD
De pers heeft een grote kans op PKD ofwel cystenieren. PKD veroorzaakt vergiftiging door chronisch nierfalen. De kat vermagert, wordt steeds zwakker en sterft uiteindelijk een langzame dood. Deze vorm van nierfalen is niet te genezen.
Pijnlijke oogzweren
Doordat de ogen uitpuilen en de oogleden niet goed sluiten, wordt het midden van het hoornvlies te droog. Op die plek op het oog ontstaat dan een pijnlijke zweer (corneasequester). Het ziet eruit als een splinter midden in het oog. De behandeling is langdurig en lastig. Ook naar binnen krullende oogleden (entropion) of huidplooien van de neus die in het oog prikken (trichiasis), veroorzaken pijnlijke oogontstekingen.
Moeilijke bevalling
Bij de pers verloopt de bevalling geregeld moeizaam omdat de kop erg breed is in verhouding tot het bekkenkanaal van de moeder. Ook dit is een gevolg van de kortere schedel.
